Looking for a draft nickname? Look no further.
The Houston Rockets are set to add yet another promising young player to their roster after securing the number three overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft. However, fans are divided on who the team should select come draft night like in previous years. The Rockets could still land a pillar at number three, as several talented players will still be on the board when Houston makes their selection.
Donovan Clingan – DC 713
The 7’2” big man out of University Connecticut had a stellar season for the Wildcats, recording 7.4 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 13 points per game during the regular season. Clingan would add much-needed rim protection to the roster and would be able to learn from Jeff Green and Steven Adams.
Now for the nickname: Donovan Clingan’s first and last name initials are D.C and 713 is the Houston area code. Another option for a nickname would be the Clingan Crew.
The only issue with drafting Clingan is that Houston would have two big men who struggle shooting from three in Alpren Sengun and Donovan Clingan, and there are questions about the two players’ ability to play together. However, with the Rockets being positioned to make another leap, it is likely Clingan would have time to develop behind Houston’s veteran centers, and if either Clingan or Sengun develops a respectable three-point shot, Houston will have their frontcourt of the future.
Reed Sheppard – Reed Rowdies
Reed Rowdies is a play on Sheppard’s first name (Reed), and the long-time nickname for diehard Rockets fans (The Red Rowdies).
Sheppard had a fantastic season for the Kentucky Wildcats, averaging 12.5 points, 2.5 steals, 4.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Sheppard would fill a huge need for this Rocket’s team as the Rocket’s are in dire need of a floor general who can play off and on the ball. Sheppard’s biggest strength is his shooting, which allows him to play off-ball. Sheppard has good range and shoots well when contested as well as uncontested. Additionally, Sheppard would be able to learn under Rockets starting point guard Fred Van Vleet. Sheppard is likely the best fit available for the Rockets at pick three but is the less flashy big-name type pick.
Stephon Castle – Castle Crew
Teammate of Donovan Clingan, the Uconn guard Stephon Castle adds great defensive versatility and playmaking ability. Castle averaged 11.1 points, 2.9 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 47.2 percent on field goals. The only question with Castle would be his questionable three-point shooting as the Rockets already have both Amen Thompson and Alpren Sengun two players who struggle shooting from deep on their roster.
