Houston’s two biggest names are after max extensions. The Rockets have yet to offer that kind of money.
The NBA extension deadline for 2021 NBA Draft players is tomorrow: Monday, October 21. The Houston Rockets have two big names who are looking for stability and extensions in Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun. According to Shams Charania, the Rockets have yet to offer max deals to either player, though they have offered a deal to both it seems.
Shams said:
The Rockets’ front office, and both Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun and their camps… they’ve had productive conversations. Resourceful conversations.
But at the end of the day, both players have belief in their play, in their production last season, and what their ceiling could be… that they are maximum contract type of players, potentially down the line. So, the Rockets will present and have presented both players with deals that do bring some level of stability right now. But if both players want to bet on themselves and play it out into the year, and into restricted free agency… that’s really the tug and pull right now.
These players that are up for extensions, there’s not a max contract on the table right now. If there was, there would have been an extension signed. So, I think between now and Monday, you’re going to see a level of stability in these contract offers. At the end of the day, both players will have to make determinations. Will we want to secure those deals, or wait until we’re restricted free agency?

This is not surprising in that it doesn’t really benefit Houston to offer max extensions at this time, as Sengun’s low cap hold and restricted free agency means that the Rockets retain flexibility by not signing max extensions and the team will have the right to match any offer in free agency.
It appears as a show of faith, the Rockets have offered both players long-term contracts, just not the kind either player desires. With both Sengun and Green betting on themselves for the value of their extensions, that hopefully means good things for their level of play this year with the Rockets.
