Rockets surprise everyone by extending Green and Sengun ahead of the season opener.
According to Shams Charania the Houston Rockets have agreed to a three-year $106 million rookie contract extension with Jalen Green. According to the report there is a player option in the third season. This would give Jalen the ability to increase his earning potential should he exceed the expectations of the new deal.

This news comes on the heels of TDS’s Darren Yuvan reporting that neither Green nor Sengun had been offered max contracts by the Rockets. While this remains true, many are scratching their heads that this deal would get made before any extension is offered to Alperen Sengun, since Sengun has been the more productive player and has shown the most growth between the two players over their first three seasons in the league.
While Jalen’s preseason has been good, it appears early that his consistency is at minimum still a question mark. That may be why the Rockets were willing to extend the Jalen experiment for a couple of more years before either offering him max money, or deciding to move on from him. If he continues to struggle this contract would still be friendly enough to be able to move him in a trade in the first two seasons or in a sign-and-trade after the first two years.
Undoubtedly the attention will now turn to Alperen Sengun. Rockets fans already want to know if and when he and the Rockets will agree on a contract extension, with the belief by many that he has earned a full max-level extension of five years and $224 million. The clock is ticking as today is the deadline for any NBA team to complete these types of deals with their players. If a deal is not reached by 6 p.m. ET tonight, then the 2024-2025 season will start with Jalen Green’s future in Houston more secure than Alperen Seungun’s. All eyes are on the Houston Rockets front office until sundown.
(Update)
According to Bobby Marks, the Rockets have reached an agreement with Alperen Sengun to a five-year $185 million rookie contract extention. The contract includes a player option in the last year.
