Ime Udoka could rejoin the NBA’s head-coaching ranks next season.
According to The Athletic’s Kelly Iko, the Houston Rockets will interview Udoka for their coaching vacancy Wednesday. Udoka didn’t coach this season after getting suspended by the Boston Celtics.
Despite an uncomfortable ending to his brief Celtics tenure, many Rockets fans (but not all) are excited to give Udoka a second chance.
“Ime Udoka is the one,” a fan declared. “I hope we get him.”

After spending nearly a decade as an assistant for three teams (Spurs, 76ers, and Nets), Udoka led Boston to the NBA Finals in his first season as a head coach. However, the Celtics levied a one-year suspension against him for violating team policies, including an improper relationship with a female staffer.
Boston confirmed Udoka was no longer part of the organization after signing his replacement, Joe Mazzulla, to an extension as the permanent head coach.
The Rockets fired Stephen Silas after the rebuilding team showed little progress during a 22-60 season. Houston will return to the lottery for the third straight year.
While Udoka inherited a contender in Boston, he’d have a far tougher path leading the Rockets back to contention. However, that road would look far smoother if landing the No. 1 pick to select the highly touted Victor Wembenyama.
