The Houston Texans gave Joe Mixon a new deal the day after acquiring him from the Cincinnati Bengals.
On Wednesday, Houston sent a seventh-round pick to Cincinnati for the running back. On Thursday, the Texans gave Mixon a three-year extension.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mixon’s new contract is worth $27 million with $16 million guaranteed.
Mixon will receive a raise from the reworked two-year, $11.5 million deal he signed to stay in Cincinnati last offseason. The 2021 Pro Bowler took a pay cut amid the possibility of becoming a cap casualty.
Mixon turned 309 touches into 1,410 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. However, the Bengals were on the verge of cutting him before finding a trade partner in Houston. They signed Zack Moss to a two-year deal.
The four-time 1,000-yard rusher will replace Devin Singletary, who joined the New York Giants after compiling a career-high 898 rushing yards in Houston last season. Mixon will play for a different AFC contender following seven seasons in Cincinnati.
After winning the AFC South in C.J. Stroud’s first season, the Texans are gearing up to make more noise in 2024. Mixon, who turns 28 in July, joins an offense maintaining most of its core pieces after improving from 31st to 12th.
Meanwhile, the defense will look far different after signing star pass-rushers Danielle Hunter and Denico Autry. They also added linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and cornerback Jeff Okudah.
Via KPRC’s Aaron Wilson, Mixon said it was “shocking” to learn the Bengals were moving him. Yet he’s looking forward to joining the Texans.
“I’m just excited to be here, feel wanted, and I just can’t wait to make the most of my opportunity when my number is called.”
