Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair recently stated that he met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during his three-game suspension for a hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The play occurred during the two teams’ Week 13 showdown when Al-Shaahir delivered a late hit on Lawrence that left the Jags’ passer concussed and eventually placed on injured reserve. With his time away from the team coming to an end, Al-Shaair wanted to clear the air about the incident before returning to action in the Texans’ final game of the season against the Tennesee Titans.
The Statement About His Suspension
While Al-Shaair has accepted responsibility for his actions, he sent out a lengthy message online, as well. In it, he discussed some of the negative perceptions surrounding him and recognized some on-field behavior that he needs to change.
“While so many jumped at the first opportunity to hop on the false narrative – that l’m a dirty player or bad person – the messages from all who stood by me were the only things keeping me mentally afloat during a time of isolation. I’ve learned so much from this entire experience. Seeing myself on video – letting my emotions get the best of me to the point where I completely lost it – was an embarrassing and eye-opening moment for me.”
“I’ve had to earn everything in my life. I never want to allow anyone to get me to a point where I jeopardize everything that I’ve worked all my life to obtain. That was not the way I want to represent myself or my family and I will continue to learn and grow from that moment.”
After some more reflection, the Texans defender closed by discussing the negativity surrounding the play, and how he is looking forward to the future.
“Lastly, I’ll say that this world is full of negative people who can’t wait to tear you down, but if you move with love and compassion, the seeds of good you planted in others’ lives can grow into the very tree that shades you with comfort and compassion when you need it most.
“I am a man of God; I am a leader, a warrior, and a lover. I am also a hell of a football player, and I’m grateful to be back doing what I love.”
Reinforcements for the Texans
Along with Al-Shaair returning, the Texans will also welcome wide receiver Diontae Johnson in Week 18. The Pro Bowl playmaker was signed to help out the receiver corps. Houston has lost standouts Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell for the season.
Having lost three of their last five games, the Texans (9-8) could use all the help they can get right now. Despite already clinching the AFC South Division, Coach DeMeco Ryans’ squad has faltered down the stretch. They will look to close out the season with a confidence-building win against the 3-13 Titans.
