Let’s take a quick look at what we saw this afternoon.
The Houston Texans got the win against the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20. That’s the important part to remember here.
It was an ugly, sloppy mess of a game, riddled with penalties and questionable defensive moments.
It started about as badly as it could, when after forcing the Jags to go three and out, Steven Sims muffed the punt, giving the Jags killer field position to start their second drive. They would score a touchdown on the next play.
Five minutes later the Texans would strike back with a Stefon Diggs run, yes, you read that correctly, a five yard rush for a touchdown to put the score even at 7-7.
Another five minutes after that, the Jags would go ahead with a Cam Little field goal, 10-7.
The second quarter would be just as lively on the offensive side with a three yard touchdown pass from Stroud to Nico Collins, who finished the day with 151 yards and a touchdown.
Cam Little would get another field goal, and the Texans would return the favor to put the Texans up 17-13 at the half.
The third quarter was one that pretty much everyone who saw it would like to forget. Christian Kirk would put the Jags ahead again 20-17.
But in the final minute of play, C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense put it all together to make a nine play 69-yard (nice) touchdown drive, finding Dare Ogbunwale in the end zone to put the final nail in the coffin for the Jags.
While the win is great, this team looks downright sloppy and undisciplined. The team as it is playing now is not going to live up to the Super Bowl expectations that were thrust upon them during the offseason. Especially easily avoidable, stupid penalties like Steven Sims’ unsportsmanlike penalty on a play he wasn’t EVEN ON THE FIELD FOR.
Here is today’s wall of shame, all the Texans who chalked up penalties in today’s game.
OG Shaq Mason (2) – False Start (5), Holding (10)
OG Kenyon Green (3) – Ineligible Man Downfield x2 (5), Holding (10),
RB Dare Ogbunwale (1) – Holding (10)
DT Tim Settle (1) – Encroachment (5)
TE Dalton Schultz (1) – Illegal Shift (5)
OT Laremy Tunsil (2) – Holding x2 (10)
DT Foley Fatukasi (1) – Holding (5)
WR Steven Sims (1) – Unsportsmanlike Conduct (13)
That’s 93 yards of offense lost because of bad discipline and just outright stupid behavior (STEVEN SIMS) on 12 penalties.
I don’t care how great a team you build, you are not going to win much if you cannot get your penalties under control. And right now this team does not have them under control, despite what DeMeco Ryans and company might tell you.
But…the Texans win, and I can be happy with that at least.
