Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t expected to return to the 49ers this offseason. With that said, a bidding war for his services could potentially break out.
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported this week that Garoppolo is one of the top three options for teams in need of help at quarterback.
“Talking to teams around the league, he’s expected to be really number 3 in the pecking order behind Derek Carr and Aaron Rodgers in this quarterback carousel,” Fowler said.
Fowler then mentioned the Falcons and Texans as potential landing spots for Garoppolo.
The Texans could pursue Garoppolo if they’re looking for a bridge quarterback. The Falcons, meanwhile, make sense as a suitor because they run a variation of Kyle Shanahan’s system.
It’s worth noting that Garoppolo reportedly wants a contract that “measures with his skillset and ability.”
Garoppolo completed 67.2 percent of his passes this season for 2,437 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. The main knock on him is that he’s not very durable.
We’ll find out this offseason where Garoppolo will resume his NFL career.
