The Houston Texans made a major splash by acquiring Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday. They quickly restructured the star wide receiver’s contract.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans “wiped out” the final three years of Diggs’ deal. They moved $3.5 million previously guaranteed in 2025 to give Diggs a raise this season, but he can enter free agency after receiving $22.52 million in 2024.
Following up on that arrangement, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini called the new contract a “mutual decision” for Diggs and the Texans.
“This setup allows Houston to be more flexible with the cap, and also gives Diggs a shot at more money in the offseason,” Russini wrote.
If Diggs carries over his success in Buffalo, he could be poised to land another major payday.
Diggs led the NFL in receptions (445) from 2020 to 2023 while averaging 81.4 receiving yards per game. He scored at least eight touchdowns in all four Pro Bowl seasons.
Houston continued a busy offseason by acquiring Diggs. Looking to optimize C.J. Stroud’s rookie contract, the Texans have also added Joe Mixon, Danielle Hunter, Denico Autry, and Azeez Al-Shaair.
Diggs could turn the Texans into a legitimate contender in 2024, but it may now be a short stay. However, the shortened deal could motivate Diggs to maintain his status as a top-tier wideout during a contract year.
Following this year’s raise, he’ll go into the season as the NFL’s 11th-highest-paid wide receiver.
