A look into the Houston Texans safety situation.
The Houston Texans have a young player who could have the chance to start in 2024 and his name is Calen Bullock.
Bullock was drafted by the Texans in the third-round of the 2024 NFL Draft and there could be a scenario in which he works his way into a starting job. With defensive back Jalen Pitre playing a lot of nickel in training camp, there is now an open spot next to veteran Jimmie Ward.
Pitre played a lot of nickel in college at Baylor, which led to the talented defensive back winning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, along with being being drafted in the second-round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Texans have been rotating several players next to Ward throughout training camp, one being Eric Murray. Murray has been with the team since 2020 and is not likely to be starting, but could provide solid depth.
Bullock has been inserted into the Texans first-team defense a bit throughout the first few days of camp and he has made plays, nearly intercepting a ball thrown by quarterback Davis Mills to wide receiver Nico Collins.
Rookie safety Calen Bullock had a near INT of Davis Mills. He read it the whole way, stepped in front of the receiver and just dropped it. Would have been a pick-six

The young defensive back has game-changing type coverage skills that can make a real impact at some point on Houston’s defense. Bullock is a long, rangy player that has the potential to do things that the other safeties can not.
It is definitely too early to know if he will be that guy at safety, but the results so far tell us that there are things to be excited about moving forward.
