Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is one of the biggest names on the free agent market, and the former All-Pro could sign with a longtime rival in the offseason. Origianlly entering the league with the Minnesota Vikings, Diggs joined the Buffalo Bills in 2020 before joining the Houston Texans in 2024. In four of the past five seasons, Diggs’ season ended at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Now set to reach unrestictred free agency, one prominent NFL insider believes the veteran could join his longtime rivals.
According to Bleacher Report‘s Moe Morton, Stefon Diggs is the ideal free agent for the Chiefs, as his injury will likely drive down his cost on the open market and the team could use a reliable set of hands for their inevitable postseason run.
“Coming off a significant injury, DIggs may be available on the free agent market at a discounted rate…The four-time Pro Bowler is an ideal fit for a team that doesn’t need him at full strength early in the season but could use a boost down the stretch and in the playoffs.”
Chiefs Projected to Sign Free Agent Stefon Diggs
It would be weird to see Stefon Diggs in a Chiefs uniform, but stranger free agent signings have happened. As alluded to above, Diggs tore his ACL in October and the 31-year-old may not be at full strength in Week 1. However, the Chiefs boast one of the best rosters in football and the regular season is something of a formality for them. They will make the playoffs, and they must be at their best when the postseason kicks off.
Due to his age and injury status, Stefon Diggs will not be the most popular name on the free agent market. However, he should draw some interest, and the Chiefs won’t be the only team interested in signing the veteran. In no particular order, the following three teams could also make a push for his services.
Other Fits
Washington Commanders
The future is bright for the Washington Commanders. After making the NFC Championship Game with a rookie quarterback and first-year head coach, the team now has over $81 million in cap space to address their remaining needs and secure another Lombardi Trophy. Terry McLaurin is a great receiver who thrived with second-overall pick Jayden Daniels, but another reliable would make this offense all the more dangerous. Stefon Diggs won’t break the bank as a free agent, which means Washington can use most of their money to address the secondary and offensive line.
Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh believes in the power of the run game, but even the old-school head coach knows Justin Herbert needs more help. Second-round pick Ladd McConkey should be a featured part of this offense for years to come, but the rest of the depth chart desperately needs more help. While the interior offensive line will probably be Harbaugh’s primary offseason focus, the team should invest in another set of hands. With Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin unlikely to reach the open market, Diggs might be one of the better options available.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a budding superstar in first-round pick Brian Thomas, but first-year head coach Liam Coen could use another receiver. With Christian Kirk a likely cut candidate and Gabriel Davis disappointing in 2024, Jacksonville could sign Stefon Diggs as a free agent and immediately plug him in as the WR2 in the offense. Trevor Lawrence may not have lived up to his insane pre-draft billing, but he’s still an above-average quarterback who should get the most out of the veteran.
