Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins tweets and deletes an interesting post this past week on social media. According to sources, he said “Don’t know what you heard but I’m not done yet,” but it wasn’t too long until the tweet was deleted. This comes after a fake Adam Schefter Twitter page made a post stating Hopkins is retiring but after deleting his response, it seems like the veteran will be taking time to contemplate his future. Originally selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former South Carolina product will become a favorable free agent in the market next month if the Chiefs don’t plan on re-signing him.
However, the salary cap situation for Kansas City is harder this offseason since most players such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones are among the ones who make up most of the space. There have been reports that the Chiefs will try to re-sign wide receiver Marquise Brown but not so much for Hopkins. The Chiefs originally brought in Hopkins in a trade this past 2024 campaign while attempting to improve the passing attack for Mahomes’ offense. However, with Rashee Rice returning next season, the Chiefs might be able to retain Brown to team with him and rookie Xavier Worthy.
There might be much room for Hopkins to excel in the passing game so this means he might want to test the free-agent market. If there is minimal interest, he will probably retire. However, he should have plenty of suitors and the Chargers, Patriots and Texans could bring him in for a visit.

Building Herbert’s Offense
The main priority for the head coach Jim Harbaugh this offseason is to give a fair chance for quarterback Justin Herbert. He admits he didn’t set him up in the best position in the postseason so this means looking for a capable pass catcher should be their duty in this year’s free agency. Meanwhile, the Chargers found a gem in last year’s draft after selecting Ladd McConkey who has been the only dependable set of hands. The team will likely release Quentin Johnston while Joshua Palmer and DJ Chark will become free agents.
The new offense for Herbert will look completely different but it should be good news for the quarterback if the Chargers play its cards right. Hopkins signing with the Chargers would address their issue of finding a capable deep threat. This will likely leave McConkey focusing on catching the slant route balls where he easily thrives. It’s a win-win situation even though Hopkins is aging, he’s a temporary fixture while they get someone in the draft in April.
Other Suitors
Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have a promising regime in place after hiring Mike Vrabel as their next head coach. There have been rumors floating that Kendrick Bourne could be a trade candidate next month and if that’s the case, the team should be in the market for a big-time playmaker either way. Drake Maye is an excelling quarterback and the Patriots only need a few capable veteran wide receivers to help boost his production. Perhaps, Hopkins could be one of the names even though he aging but the Patriots might not be far from a Super Bowl contention if Vrabel can turn this organization around quickly.
However, a return to the Houston Texans is not out of the question. C.J. Stroud’s offense hasn’t been the same without the presence of Tank Dell after his brutal end to his 2024 campaign. Nico Collins is the only active wide receiver on the offense so they could bring back Hopkins for one more run until Dell comes back and is healthy.
