No. 1 seeds have gotten dethroned throughout an unpredictable men’s college basketball season, but Houston narrowly avoided another upset Sunday.
Jamal Shead hit a go-ahead bucket at the buzzer to give Houston a 67-65 victory over Memphis. The top-ranked Cougars prevented their first loss since Jan. 22 and ended the regular season at 29-2.
College hoops fans reacted to Shead’s clutch shot at FedEx Forum.
“Jamal Shead has ice in his veins,” a fan wrote on Twitter.
“They slept on Shead to their demise,” FOX 9’s Corin Hoggard said. “The man is clutch.
Every. Single. Time.”
“THIS IS MARCH!” a fan declared.
“Shead happens,” Reagan Earnst wrote.
“A glimpse of what your home team could potentially bring to the Final Four right here in Houston,” KHOU’s Scylla Lopez said.
Shead may be peaking at the right time. After scoring a season-high 25 points in Thursday’s victory over Wichita State, the junior tallied 16 points and seven assists Sunday.
Houston ends the season on an 11-game winning streak. Kelvin Sampson’s team, which made the Elite Eight last year, should enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed.
The Cougars could claim a major home-court advantage if advancing to the Final Four, which takes place at Houston’s NRG Stadium on April 1 and 3.
