The University of Houston has a new athletic director – and just in time for the start of the 2024 college football season.
On Saturday, the university announced that Eddie Nunez has been named the new athletic director. He has agreed to a five-year deal and will be leaving the University of New Mexico to go to Houston.
He was New Mexico’s AD before becoming the school’s vice president in 2021.
“Eddie Nunez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success during a time of great transformation in college athletics,” Houston President Renu Khator said, via ESPN.
Nunez replaces Chris Pezman after he was let go in June. Pezman had been the school’s AD for seven years before he was fired.
Houston made this announcement just two weeks before its first football game against UNLV. Houston finished the 2023 season with a 4-8 record and didn’t make a bowl game.
The 2023 season was Houston’s first in the Big 12 after spending the last 10 in the American Athletic Conference.
This will be Dana Holgerson’s sixth season at Houston as head coach. So far, he has compiled a 31-28 record in his first five seasons.
He’ll try and get the program back to bowl eligibility when the season starts on August 31.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. ET.
