The Aggies control their destiny in the SEC, but first, a test in SC
Texas A&M remained undefeated in the SEC thanks to a 38-23 win over the LSU Tigers last week. The Aggies stifled the run on defense and turned up the heat on Nussmeier in the second half.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Aggies were all about the rushing attack with almost 250 yards on the ground and 5 rushing touchdowns.
It was a massive win for Texas A&M but things never truly get easy in the SEC. Next up is a test on the road against a South Carolina team that has been overlooked by many. Make no mistake, this is a dangerous team and a dangerous environment for the Aggies to step into.
Let’s dive into what needs to happen in the trenches for the Aggies to win.
Offensive Line
The task for the offensive line in this one is simple.
Protect the passer.
This is a South Carolina pass rush that can absolutely wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks and the Aggies will undoubtedly have their work cut out for them.
Kyle Kennard and Dylan Stewart could very well be the best edge duo in the nation meaning whether it’s Marcel Reed or Conner Weigman at QB, a quick internal clock will be needed.
The Gamecocks are also stout against the run. However, we know what this offensive identity is at this stage of the season for Texas A&M. The Aggies will look to establish the run, even if it doesn’t come right away.
This is a matchup of a good offensive line against a good defensive line unit.
It should make for some fun football viewing.
I expect some early struggles from the Aggie offense on the road against an excellent defensive unit. Turnovers have to be avoided here to win this game. Win the field position battle and you’ve got an excellent shot.
Defensive Line
As great as the South Carolina defensive line is at getting after opposing quarterbacks, the South Carolina offensive line is perhaps the exact opposite. The Gamecocks rank 132nd in the nation in sacks allowed, ahead of only the Oklahoma Sooners.
Nic Scourton and company should feast against South Carolina.
However, it is extremely important that the Aggies maintain discipline in their rush lanes. LaNorris Sellers is likely the most mobile quarterback the Aggies have faced to this point in the season and if you give him a seam, he can hurt you in a big way as LSU found out earlier this year.
It’s controlled chaos for the Aggies – pressure Sellers but don’t let him out of the pocket.
The sacks will come and turnovers will be there as well.
In the rushing attack, in addition to the aforementioned Sellers, the Aggies will face a familiar face in Rocket Sanders. The former Arkansas RB is the leading back for the Gamecocks.
Given how well the Aggies have handled rushing offenses of late, I’d expect another strong showing in the run game from this defensive line on Saturday.
What is the key for this Texas A&M defense on Saturday?
No busts.
South Carolina’s defense is going to limit the Aggie offense.
The Aggie defense will need to minimize mistakes in order to prevent South Carolina from getting in the lead and playing keep-away ball.
While the defense finds a less difficult matchup than the offense, their job is no less important.
I expect an extremely close game when the Aggies take the field in Columbia, SC on Saturday. Here’s to hoping Texas A&M can reclaim “Sandstorm” once again.
