Let’s make one of these happen
The Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns will resume their rivalry on the football field on Nov. 30 as the Horns join the SEC, and even in May, the anticipation is already reaching a fever pitch. After a 13-year hiatus, both sides want to win this first matchup of the resumption of the rivalry, perhaps more than ever before.
This always heated rivalry has the chance to be more meaningful than it’s ever been, and any college football rivalry worth its salt has a trophy.
Yes I know we technically had one previously, but this thing had absolutely zero personality, and we all know that we can do better.
So with that in mind, my twisted mind went to work crafting some potential ideas for what a new Texas A&M vs. Texas rivalry trophy could look like. And I have to say, I think some of these are worth looking at…
The Silver Smoker
There’s nothing more Texan than BBQ, so it would be more than fitting for the winner of the Aggies and Longhorns matchup to be the proud owner of The Silver Smoker, with the team consuming freshly smoked brisket as a part of their postgame celebration.
Terry Price would be proud.
The Bronze Buc-ee
We all know that #brands love to insert themselves into these kinds of things, and no brand has become more of a Texas institution than Buc-ee’s. Oh, and their founder just happens to be an Aggie. Make it happen, Arch Alpin!
The Platinum Post Hole Digger
Whether you’re farmer or livestock, you are familiar with the vital role that fencing plays in our state. So perhaps it’s fitting that the rivalry trophy be the Platinum Post Hole Digger. Bonus points for the first team who uses it to dig a hole in the opposing team’s field during the postgame celebration.
The P.U.F. Pastry
The Pop Tarts Bowl showed us all the potential for edible postgame shenanigans. And given that Texas A&M and Texas are the two recipients of the state’s Permanent University Fund (PUF) money, a dollar sign made out of puff pastry seems more than appropriate. And just as in real life, Texas Tech would not be eligible to receive it.
The Title Belt Buckle
Title belts originated in wrestling, but have become more and more common throughout athletics. But for a matchup of Texas teams, not just any title belt will do. We need it also be the biggest gosh darn belt BUCKLE the world has ever seen. Is it obnoxious and tasteless? Yes, and that’s what makes it so perfect.
The Texla
I told you the brands would want to be a part of this. And with Tesla being based in Austin and now offering a “pickup truck,” they seem to be a prime candidate. Bonus points if Elon wants to sign an NIL deal to give a Cybertruck to all of the players from the winning team.
The #scoreboard, presented by Samsung
Since this game is all about bragging rights, let’s just embrace the pettiness and have the trophy be a literal scoreboard. In this case, the fine folks and Samsung will provide only the highest quality OLED screen for the occasion. Now the next time you’re looking to shut down your rivals’ argument online, instead of just saying “#scoreboard,” you can also show it.
A UIL State Championship Trophy
All due respect to the other college teams in Texas, but we all know the winner of the Aggies and Horns game will claim to be state champs. Why not just make it official and give them the same University Interscholastic League trophy awarded to all of the high school state champions in Texas?
