Mike Elko has plenty to work with in year one
We’re single digit days away from Texas A&M’s 2024 season, so the offseason hype is almost over. But not quite yet. On Thursday, 247 Sports released its Team Talent Composite rankings for the 2024 season, and the Aggies are among the most talented rosters in the country, coming in at No. 7.

Granted, having a talented roster is not a new development for the Aggies, having been ranked in the top 10 of these rankings each of the past three seasons (as high as No. 4 in 2022 and 2023). But one thing the rankings don’t account for is the age and experience of that talent. Entering this season, Texas A&M has the fewest (presumed) underclassmen starters they’ve had since 2020, and 47% of all of their blue chip players are in their third year or more of college. They are led in no small part by members of the 2022 class, which (despite some infamous portal departures) will still contribute greatly to the team’s success this fall. That includes QB Conner Weigman, RB Levon Moss, WR Noah Thomas, OLs Kam Dewberry/Mark Nabou, DE Shemar Stewart and S Bryce Anderson (among others).
And of course, the narrative is that the talent in recent seasons was wasted by a lack of development and subpar scheme under head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff. But hope springs eternal under new head coach Mike Elko. Should they be able to maximize the talent on this team, they could surprise a lot of people this fall. After all, the only team on the A&M schedule listed higher in the team talent composite is the Longhorns.
In the words of Mike Elko himself, “culture wins games. talented culture wins championships.”
