The Aggies are one win away from Omaha!
The Aggies got off to a tumultuous start in Game 1 of the Bryan-College Station Super Regional. On top of losing projected top five pick Braden Montgomery to an injury in the first inning, starting pitcher Ryan Prager had an uncharacteristically poor outing. Prager gave up 6 runs on 7 hits through 1.2 innings before being relieved by Chris Cortez.
With the Aggies down 6-2 and all of the momentum with the Ducks, Cortez entered the game and proceeded to steady things for A&M by having the best outing of his career. The hard-throwing righty pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits and striking out a career-best 10 batters.
Cortez’s exceptional performance allowed the Aggies to claw their way back into the game, taking a 7-6 lead in the 4th inning before adding 3 more in the 5th. DH Hayden Schott led the way with 3 RBIs, while Appel and Kaeden Kent (Montgomery’s replacement in the lineup) each drove in 2 runs.
Evan Aschenbeck took the mound in the top of the 8th and slammed the door on the Ducks, throwing 1.2 hitless innings while striking out 3.
Winning Game 1 of a Super Regional feels great, but the loss of Montgomery certainly puts a damper on the mood of Aggie fans. His status is unknown at this time, but the early signs are not positive.
Shane Sdao will take the mound for Texas A&M tomorrow as the Aggies look to punch their ticket to Omaha. First pitch is set for 6:30pm on ESPN2.
