Well that didn’t last long.
It was just four months ago that Youngstown State LB Alex Howard committed to come to Texas A&M, but after participating in spring football in College Station, it appears that he will re-enter the transfer portal in the spring window.
I would like to thank Coach Elko and staff for the opportunity to play football at Texas A&M. However, after much contemplation and consideration I have decided to re-enter the transfer portal!!! pic.twitter.com/I3xlxFLjHH

Howard joined a Texas A&M linebacker room in need of some bolstering following the departures of Edgerrin Cooper (NFL Draft) and Chris Russell (no remaining eligibility), but he was far from devoid of competition. While 2023 starter Taurean York is presumed to occupy one starting role, the other could be snagged by any number of players, from junior Martrell Harris, sophomore Daymion Sanford, Florida transfer Scooby Williams, or even a freshman like Tristan Jernigan or Jordan Lockhart.
The spring transfer portal window officially opens on Tuesday, and we already know that Howard as well as safety Jacoby Mathews plan to enter. It would be foolish to think they’ll be the last. But unlike December, it doesn’t appear the Aggies anticipate losing significant pieces of their roster (at least according to Mike Elko).
Texas A&M coach Mike Elko expressed optimism about the upcoming transfer portal window, which opens next Tuesday.
“I do not think I am necessarily overly concerned with guys who are clear-cut returning players or difference makers in our program.” https://t.co/GHHSdJFrBN

If the Aggies can avoid any major losses, and perhaps continue to add to the depth of their roster, fans may start feeling cautiously optimistic about the team’s prospects this fall.
