Historical notes:
- The all-time series is tied 3-3 (2-2 as SEC foes), with Florida winning the most recent matchup in 2022. The Gators are 1-1 against the Ags at The Swamp, with A&M winning the most recent game there in 2017.
- Freshman Florida QB D.J. Lagway is a Texas high school player who the Aggies heavily pursued as a recruit. He set a Gators freshman record for single game passing yardage last week against Samford.
- The A&M defense brought a lot over from Florida in the offseason, including DC Jay Bateman, DL Coach Shaun Spencer, LB Scooby Williams and DB Jaydon Hill.
- Famous Florida alumni include Erin Andrews, Tim Tebow, Emmitt Smith (who’s son E.J. plays for A&M), Marco Rubio, Darrell Hammond and Bob Vila. And while he didn’t go to UF, you can’t omit Gainesville’s favorite son, Tom Petty.
What to watch for:
- Season-altering showdown: After both teams suffered disappointing losses to begin the season, both fanbases immediately circled this game as their chance to rebound. Start 1-0 in SEC play and all of your goals are still on the table. But fall to 0-2 against FBS competition and it feels like the season is over before it even began.
- Come down to the QB?: Not to over-simplify, but the QB who plays better may decide this game. Weigman has high upside and experience, but showed some concerning inaccuracy against Notre Dame. Lagway is exceptionally talented, but is still a true freshman with little experience at this level. Whoever steps up may lead their team to victory.
- Swamp crotch: The forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms and a high of 88 degrees. With a 3:30 p.m. local time kickoff, that promises to be a steamy environment for all involved.
