It will be a work in progress
The Astros finalized their 26-man roster today. Yesterday’s blockbuster news was the addition of Cam Smith AND Zack Dezenzo on the roster. Besides, the obvious choices, there remained some doubt as to who would be the second utility infielder and possible starting second baseman. As many expected, Brendan Rodgers was chosen.
Several days ago, it was announced that Luis Contreras and Steven Okert would make the bullpen over another Spring star, Logan VanWey. Rafael Montero, who was DFA’d last year, gets one more chance to earn his $11.5 million annual salary. Rookie Ryan Gusto is the last man chosen to fill out the bullpen and could be inserted into the starting rotation if any of the other starters falter badly or get injured.
Soon, the Astros will have to figure out what to do about Forrest Whitley. He is currently on IL and out of options. If the former first-round draft pick does not make the roster, the Astros risk losing him.
