The Astros pulled one out of the fire yesterday while Ryan Gusto tries to make his case for fifth starter today against the Mets
The Astros’ minor league squad came from behind to defeat the Cardinals yesterday 6-5 thanks to a Collin Price walk-off single. Of course, we never take Spring performances too seriously, but there were some good omens and a few worrying signs in yesterday’s game.
On the negative side, #2 starter Hunter Brown was very hittable, allowing five hits, a walk, and two runs in 2.1 innings pitched. And venerable prospect Forrest Whitley blew a save, allowing two hits, a walk, and a run in one inning.
On the flip side, the Astros finally dusted off their home run bats, getting three solo homers from Jeremy Pena, Jake Meyers, and Jose Altuve, who showed 2017-type power with a shot to right-center. Meyers is starting to break out a little, and as the designated offensive weak link, any offensive production above the Mendoza line from Meyers is gravy.
Unfortunately, Christian Walker was scratched from yesterday’s game due to an oblique injury.
Ryan Gusto starts for the Astros in today’s 5:10 CT televised game against the Mets, shooting for opening day fifth starter or long reliever. Top prospect Jacob Melton gets his first ST action. Plus, the exciting future hope of the Astros, Cam Smith, will try to add on to his already impressive ST resume, starting at third base. Brendan Rodgers will get a chance to make his case for a spot on the roster or even possible starting second baseman today as well.
