Chicago makes history and teams get eliminated from the postseason
With the Mariners and Twins both at least two games back of the Wild Card now, neither of them will see themselves playing in October with only two games left in the season. This is a shock seeing as the M’s held the lead in the division for most of the season and the Twins at one point were a lock for the postseason.
Let’s check out what the teams around the league did yesterday on Postseason Countdown.
Houston Astros (87-73): 5, Cleveland Guardians (92-68): 2
Kicking off their last series of the year, the Astros came out in Cleveland and banged against one of the best teams in the American League.
They kicked off the scoring in the top of the first with back-to-back hits to start the game off before Alex Bregman got a run across on a sac fly. That was the only run for either team till the Astros got two more in fourth and two more in the fifth.
With two outs and two on in the fourth, A wild pitched added another run for the Astros before Kyle Tucker put a ball in between first and second to score another. Their next two runs came in the next inning from back-to-back homers from Victor Caratini and Zach Dezenzo to put them up 5-0.
The Guardians added on their two runs in the bottom of the ninth off the bats of David Fry, who had an RBI-double, and Angel Martinez, who had an RBI-groundout, to bring the score to its final, 5-2.

The Guardians are just two games back of the Yankees for the top seed in the AL. They already have clinched their first round bye, but now they are playing to see who is coming to them.
This game also featured something that the Astros’ fans may get used to seeing in the postseason, Spencer Arrighetti coming out of the bullpen.
Chicago White Sox (39-121): 1, Detroit Tigers (86-74): 4
In a record-breaking loss for the White Sox, the Tigers have delivered to them their 121st loss, making them the losingest team in baseball history. On the other side, the Tigers stay red hot, marking their sixth win in a row and keeping them one in front of the Royals.
The scoring didn’t start till the fifth when the Tigers got their first man to cross home on a bases-loaded wild pitch before getting their next on the same batter on a sac fly, going up 2-0. The Sox answered with a Zach DeLoach solo shot, but that was all the offence they could produce.
The Tigers got their last two in the bottom of the seventh off Riley Greene’s 27th double of the year and later, a wild pitch to put them up 4-1. The Tigers’ pen went seven inning, only allowing one run on two hits and only walking one.
Detroit stays one game up on the Royals right now and are in line to make their way to Baltimore for the first round rather than Houston.
If they went to Houston, it would be the first time Tigers’ current manager and former Astros’ manager AJ Hinch would be here for the postseason since the 2020 cheating scandal.

Kansas City Royals (85-75): 0, Atlanta Braves (87-71): 3
For a team that is fighting for their postseason position, The Royals had zero answered for Max Fried, who went 8.2 innings of shutout baseball.
The game was a shutout on both sides till the fourth, when the Braves were finally able to find something for Royals starter Brady Singer. After a one-out single, Sean Murphy sent a ball into the left field bullpen for a two run bomb to put them up 2-0.
Another run crossed for Atlanta in the eighth on an error and that was all they needed to get the win over the Royals. This 3-0 loss for Kansas City moves them down to the three seed in the wild card and puts them behind the Tigers and in line to travel to Houston for the first round.
