Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes and catcher Henry Davis made Major League history in a 10-3 win over Washington. Skenes and Davis became the first players taken first overall in the MLB draft to serve as battery mates. Skenes threw six solid innings to improve to 2-1. Davis went 1 for 4 at the plate and handled Skenes’ diverse arsenal after coming in for Endy Rodriguez. Davis’ slow development since being selected with the top pick in the 2021 draft is symbolic of Pittsburgh’s struggles to identify productive position players. Davis may have a chance to solidify his spot in the big leagues while Rodriguez recovers from a lacerated right index finger.
