He embarks on a path that will hopefully end with him back in the bigs in 2025
Former Houston Astros’ first baseman Jose Abreu has singed a contract with the Senadores de San Juan in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This comes after his release from the Astros after signing a massive 3 year, $53.5 million deal during the 2023 offseason.
Reporter Francys Romero reported this morning that Abreu was “beginning his journey to an MLB comeback in 2025.”
“He will soon report to the Senadores for the winter season, which starts in early November.”

Abreu signed with the Astros coming off a stellar 2022 season, seeing him hit .304 with 40 doubles and 15 home runs in 157 games.
After joining though, he fell off a cliff. He started 141 games for the Astros in 2023, a majority of them at first base, and was unrecognizable, hitting just .237 with an OPS under .700. He was on thin ice going into the 2024 season, and it didn’t take long for the team to have had enough.
Just a month into the season, Abreu was sent down to the minors in May 2024. He did come back up for a bit, but after just 35 total games and a .124 average, the Astros released him, putting a hole at both first base and their pockets, still having to pay him over $19 million till 2026.
There is no telling whether of not Abreu to get back to his former self at age 37, but he in going to try to and he is taking his first steps.
