The Astros beat the Cards 11-5 on Sunday. Understandably, most of the starters did not play. However, there were some bright spots. Spencer Arrighetti pitched two shutout innings, but he did walk three. Also, Dezenzo had two hits and drove in two runs.
I see a few questions heading into the season that need to be addressed this camp. First, who will be the primary utility player if Altuve splits time between 2B and LF? I imagine that Dubon will get the majority of playing time at second when Altuve is in Left. However, there are a few intriguing prospects and vets who could make a push for more playing time. Dezenzo struck out too much to be effective last year, but if he can fix that, he will be a much better player. Taylor Trammell has failed to prove himself as a big-league starter, but he has the talent to be a decent fourth outfielder.
The Astros also need to solidify their rotation. I do not believe that Spencer Arrighetti will be the same pitcher he was in the second half of last season, but he has certainly earned the opportunity to start the season in the rotation, regardless of how his spring goes.
