The first number retired by the team since
Just a few weeks after getting voted into the baseball Hall of Fame, former Astros pitcher Billy Wagner will have him number 13 retired by the team on August 16th. The franchises’ all time saves leader, Wagner will be the 13th person in history to have his number hanging in Daikin Park, joining Jim Umbricht (No. 32), Don Wilson (No. 40), Jose Cruz (No. 25), Mike Scott (No. 33), Nolan Ryan (No. 34), Larry Dierker (No. 49), Jimmy Wynn (No. 24), Jeff Bagwell (No. 5), Craig Biggio (No. 7) and Jackie Robinson (No. 42).
In Wagner’s nine years with the Astros, he collected 225 saves with a 2.53 ERA, 694 strikeouts and a 26-29 record. The seven time All-Star had his best years in Houston, with his best coming in 2003 when he led the league in saves with 67 while carrying a 1.78 ERA.
Wagner joins Jeff Bagwell (class of 2017) and Craig Biggio (Class of 2015) as the only Astros to have a plaque hanging on the walls in Cooperstown.
New Astros first baseman Christian Walker, who put on a number 13 jersey at his signing day, announced that he will make the switch to number 8, last worn by Colin Moran in the 2016 season.
