Both Dezenzo and Smith land on the list
Over the past few weeks, MLB.com has been releasing lists of the top prospects at each position heading into the 2025 season and one of the list happen to feature not one, but two Astros prospects; Zach Dezenzo, who had a brief stint in the majors in 2024, ranked 9th and Cam Smith, who the Astros just recently got as the centerpiece for the Kyle Tucker trade with the Cubs, ranked 3rd.
In 2024, the Astros were ranked as the worst farm system in all of baseball and this is the only list, so far, that the Astros have had any players in, and they have two. At the end of the 2024 season, only one Astros prospect cracked the top 100 and it was outfielder Jacob Melton ranked at 89. Now with Cam Smith, there are two with him ranking 73.
This ranking gives a bit of hope to Astros fans, especially with them having two prospects land on the third base list of all lists. Dezenzo, as many Astros fans know from his short time in the bigs in 2024, has some pop in his bat, hitting four XBH in his 19 games, but does need to work on his eye at the plate, getting sent down with a nearly eight K/BB ratio, but he can play multiple positions, spending most of his time playing first base for the Astros.
Cam Smith on the other hand looks like someone who has the potential to get the call quickly. The current 21-year-old ended 2024 making it all the way to Double-A after hitting over .300 in both Low-A and Single-A while still keeping a good eye at the plate. He showed some flashes in his five Double-A games, registering five hits (two being triples), but only time will tell with both of them, but for the first time this season, the Astros have top 10 prospects at a position.
